Origins

Robert Smithson was an American artist known for his land art. In the late 1960s, he gained fame for his large-scale, site-specific earthworks that transformed the landscape. Smithson's work was characterized by his interest in entropy and the concept of time. His most famous work is the Spiral Jetty, completed in 1970, which is a massive earthwork spiral in the Great Salt Lake, Utah.
