Toshusai Sharaku

Toshusai Sharaku

Toshusai Sharaku was an ukiyo-e print artist active during the late 18th century in Japan. He became famous for his distinctive and bold style of portraying kabuki actors, primarily in their role makeup, capturing their unique expressions and intense emotions. His works were produced during a short period from 1794 to 1795, after which he vanished from the art scene. Despite the brevity of his career, the power and individuality of Sharaku's prints have made him one of the most celebrated ukiyo-e artists in history.
