He is best known for his deep focus technique, which involved using a narrow aperture and special lenses to keep both the foreground and background in sharp focus. This technique was famously employed in Orson Welles' 'Citizen Kane' (1941), earning Toland an Academy Award nomination. Toland's innovative use of lighting and camera movement also contributed to his distinct visual style.
